Seasons Greetings to All
Your Montana Board met on November 18, 2009. Wow! I now realize what a great group of people you
have elected to lead during these challenging times. Thank you.
The following committees were established:
Brady Bowles will be heading up the advertising/promotions committee. Please be sure to inspire
him with ideas and suggestions. Past board member, George Cawlfield, has offered to assist in
this process. We budgeted $12,000, which is down by $2000 from last year.
Julie Shick will serve as the Junior liaison. We budgeted $2000 toward this program.
Tour will be held in the Central Area this coming year, so it only made sense that Donna Laubach
took that chair. We allotted $750/day (maximum of $1500 for a 2 day tour) for this expense.
As you may recall, the Central Area has been reassigned to include Livingston and Big Timber.
Craig Deboer plans to head up the Finance Committee. Please let him know if you have suggestions.
Sales will be inspired by Bruce Ketchum with the help of Craig Deboer. We are looking into a
female sale and will continue to work on feeder calf sales – We have some new and innovative
ideas and will be sharing them with you at the area meetings. Budget = $3000.
I will be heading up the NILE (budgeted $5500); however, we have re-assigned many of the specific
responsibilities. Julie Shick will be the “social coordinator”. Brady Bowles will take care of
the hotel accommodations and dinner. Bruce Ketchum will be organizing the Sale. Craig DeBoer
will take care of the show. Ken & Donna Laubach will be assisted by Vince & Veronica Christensen
with Barn Superintendent responsibilities. Ron Fischer will head up the Futurity.
On a different note, we have received final notification that we have our tax exempt status.
YIPPEE!!!! However, to date we have not received a bill. Although we have no idea what it
will be, we are budgeting $7500 for this expense.
All in all we have budgeted $35,000. This does not include office expenses or any other minor
operating costs. At the September ’09 board meeting, the board members voted to put $10,000 into
a contingency fund – reserved for hard times. Sure hope we don’t have to dig into this right
away. In recent years, we have had an excess of funds in our treasury. Not so much any more.
We are all going to have to work a little harder in order to keep moving forward.
Here are the cold hard financial facts:
1. MTRA membership usually runs approximately 90 members @ $50/yr - $4500.00
2. Donation heifer (typically $8-12,000/yr) this year is down to - $6200.00
3. Donated semen up $275.00 from last year - $4275.00
4. Calendar Ads - $3700.00
The greatest thing about MTRA is its breeders. Good People with Integrity and Common Sense.
As your board, we will be “Pulling Hard and Pulling Together” to promote our Red Angus Breeders
and Red Angus Cattle; and to keep you current and informed. However, we will be counting on each
of you to help us pull a little harder.
Please feel free to contact me regarding any and all matters concerning Montana Red Angus.
Sincerely,
Kay Klompien
MTRAA President
